Moving house with children is a house removal plus a plan for the hours when every room is open. The useful work is ordinary: where they will be, what stays in the car, and which bedroom is built first.
Before the day
Tell the school or nursery the date, and ask what they need for the new address. If you are moving across Leeds, from a terrace in the inner area to a semi in Roundhay, Horsforth or Moortown, the journey to school may change. Sort that before the van, not on the first morning.
Let children pack a small bag they keep: a book, a toy, pyjamas. Everything else can be boxed by room. Do not promise a pet or a piano will travel in the car unless that is the actual plan.
On the day
Arrange for them to be with another adult while we load, if you can. If they are in the house, pick one room, shut the door, and tell the crew. We need the stairs clear.
At the new house, make the children’s beds before you chase the kitchen. A familiar duvet in a room with the door shut is enough for the first night. Keep snacks and any medication in your car.
