Five jobs before you get the keys

These five jobs sit with you, not with the van crew. They apply to a house removal in Leeds and to a smaller flat move.

1. Confirm you can get in

Keys, alarm codes and any management rule about the lift should be in your hands before we arrive. If completion is the same morning, tell us the earliest time we can unload. We cannot leave furniture on a pavement while you wait at a solicitor’s office across town.

2. Read the meters and photograph them

Gas, electric and water, at both addresses if both are your responsibility. A photo with the serial number saves an argument later. We do not read meters for you.

3. Sort the van space

Look at the signs. Residents’ zones, double yellows and a narrow terrace in Beeston or Kirkstall may need a parking suspension from Leeds City Council. Ask them in good time. Send us a photo of both frontages.

4. Pack a first-night box in your car

Kettle, mugs, medication, phone chargers, bedding, towels and basic tools. The van may be unloaded by room, but you will want a drink before the kitchen boxes are opened.

5. Send the crew the truth about access

Floor numbers, a tight stair, a piano, a shed that is included, and anything you are packing yourself. Insurance is provided. Ask what is covered when you get a free quote. A list that changes on the morning changes the time.
